Marvel villains are almost as influential as their superheroes — for every Spider-Man and Reed Richards, there's a Green Goblin or a Doctor Doom. These antagonists are as important to pop culture as they are to Marvel Comics and the MCU.
Marvel's villains are some of the most important comic characters, and their actions enormously impact the company's status quo. The biggest villains create as much change as the heroes; more often than not, Marvel's stories are really about them. They are an integral part of the equation, and it's hard to imagine Marvel without them.

30 Kingpin Has Plagued Almost Every Street Level Hero in NYC
Wilson Fisk began his criminal career as the Kingpin when he faced Spider-Man in battle. 28 The Winter Soldier Was Used To Manipulate History
When Bucky Barnes first appeared, he was an intrepid young reporter who discovered Captain America's secret identity. Soon enough, he was Marvel's first masked sidekick, fighting alongside his hero in some of the darkest battles of WWII. Unfortunately, Bucky's apparent death during the war not only impacted Marvel's use of teenage superheroes but also led to the creation of one of Marvel's most important villains.

First Appearance | Captain America (Vol. 5) #1 |

Living Status | Alive |
Bucky Barnes was taken by Russian forces and transformed into a mind-controlled superpowered assassin known as The Winter Soldier. He was kept in cryogenic stasis over the years to preserve his age and skills, though he was brought out at key moments to carry out missions that manipulated the world's history over the years. He also played a part in several heroes' lives over the years, like Wolverine and Black Widow, though he was freed from his mind control to resume his life as a hero.
27 Sabretooth Consistently Pushes the Edge in Terms of How Evil He Can Be
One of Wolverine's most powerful villains is the mutant serial killer Victor Creed/Sabretooth. The rivalry between heroes and villains is often fierce, but Wolverine and Sabretooth's never-ending feud has always taken things to the next level. Sabretooth is consistently monstrous, tormenting Wolverine and the X-Men for his own twisted enjoyment.
Created by | Chris Claremont and John Byrne |

First Appearance | Iron Fist #14 |
Origin | Mutant |
Living Status | Deceased as of Wolverine (Vol. 7) #50 |
Sabretooth continues to push the envelope for Marvel's most violent villains, even in the Krakoan age. He has a powerful legacy to uphold as Wolverine's most iconic villain. Sabretooth is more popular than many of Marvel's biggest heroes, which can cast a huge shadow over other less-popular villains. And, while Sabretooth may have been cut to shreds by Wolverine at the end of the recently concluded "Sabretooth War" storyline, there is little doubt that he will return soon enough to begin yet another campaign of terror.
26 The High Evolutionary has Altered Entire Worlds for the Worse
The High Evolutionary was always rather eccentric, but he was also rather important. He was the first in a long line of antagonists to use genetics like a weapon, experimenting and creating newer, more powerful iterations. Strangely enough, he wasn't an X-Men villain.
Created by | Stan Lee and Jack Kirby |
---|---|
First Appearance | Thor #134 |
Origin | Human mutate/sentient artificial intelligence |
Living Status | Alive |
High Evolutionary clashed with many A-list heroes and has long been very important to the history of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. He is one of the best Marvel villains, and he's also battled Thor, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Adam Warlock, and many others. High Evolutionary's recent appearance in the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has re-energized interest in the villain.

24 Bastion was Nearly Responsible for the Eradication of Marvel's Mutants
During one of the most heated battles between the mutant heroes of the X-Men and the mechanized villains known as Nimrod and Master Mold, the latter pair were grievously injured. In the ensuing chaos, the two mutant-hating machines were merged, and from them, an entirely new entity was born in the form of Bastion. Though Bastion was taken in by an otherwise loving woman and christened Sebastion Gilberti, he could not escape the most indelible aspects of his predecessors and soon embarked upon his own mission to eradicate mutantkind on Earth.

Unfortunately for Bastion, when he launched his final attack on his enemies, he realized that he hadn't properly anticipated the resistance he would face, nor the black hole created by Xorn that would ultimately end his life.
23 Mister Sinister Will Always Be Marvel's Least Trustworthy Mutant
Mister Sinister first appeared in the late '80s, bursting onto the scene of Uncanny X-Men during the classic "Mutant Massacre" story arc. ---|---|
First Appearance | Uncanny X-Men #221 |
Origin | Mutant clone/Mutant Chimera |
Living Status | Alive |
The Krakoa Era of the X-Men comics was a character renaissance for Mister Sinister. Plotting since the beginning, his machinations have unfolded and culminated in Sins of Sinister, as he moved to become a Dominion. While that was a failure, Sinister still proved he had the chops to take his place among the best Marvel villains.
22 The Celestials Create and Destroy Life in Equal Measure
Marvel's Celestials are powerful cosmic beings who have played a massive role in seeding life throughout the galaxy. Their machinations first came to the surface with the Eternals and the Deviants, as they created both races. Since then, creators have used the inscrutable cosmic titans in various roles, whether powerful manipulators or major Marvel villains.
Created by | Jack Kirby |
---|---|
First Appearance | Eternals #1 |
Origin | Cosmic beings |
Living Status | Various |
The Celestials have touched every corner of the Marvel Universe in some way. Like some of the top Marvel villains, the Celestials play in the grey area of evil. They care little for beings of the cosmos, seeing them only as experimental fodder. Their clinical approach gives them a ruthless edge that has helped them stand out.
21 The Current Baron Zemo is Every Bit as Bad as the Original
Helmut Zemo is the son of Baron Heinrich Zemo, a former Nazi who battled Captain America during WWII. 19 Moira X Single-Handedly Rewrote Marvel History Over and Over Again
When Moira MacTaggert was first introduced, she was the longtime friend of Charles Xavier and a genius geneticist who would pave the way for a bright and shining new era for mutantkind. Tragically, that era never came, and instead, it was replaced by one in which Moira herself was the biggest threat that mutantkind and the rest of the Marvel Universe would ever know.

18 The Dark Phoenix Nearly Wiped Out the Entire Planet - More Than Once
Jean Grey is a seminal Marvel character and an incredibly essential player in the X-Men narrative. While there were no plans to make her villainous in 1963, many around her were wary of the Phoenix Force's potential for corruption. 15 Onslaught Took Down Marvel's Most Powerful Heroes
Some of the worst Marvel villains have been able to target the heroes where it really hurts. With Onslaught, the powerful psionic villain first targeted the X-Men's heart before taking out most of Marvel's heroes. Onslaught was born of the dark psionic merger between Magneto and the X-Men's founder, Professor Xavier. He was further enhanced by the cosmic abilities of both Nate Grey/X-Men and Franklin Richards, making him nearly unstoppable.

He has continued to return in new and even more powerful ways, further highlighting Onslaught's importance as one of Marvel's most important villains.
14 Ultron Still Doesn't Get Enough Credit as a Villain

More recently, Ultron returned in the form of the enigmatic Vic Shade. This was his Mark Twelve form, which most shockingly came with an unexpectedly heroic streak.
13 The Dread Dormammu Possessed Others From His Dark Dimension
While he's most often known as one of Dr. Strange's greatest foes, the Dread Dormammu from the Dark Dimension has proven that his reach can extend beyond Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme. Dormammu even possessed Ego the Living Planet to create a powerful body during The Last Annihilation that he almost used to invade the universe. Dormammu is the ever-present threat waiting outside of the universe for an opening to take control.

11 Galactus Stands Tall as Marvel's Devourer of Worlds
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four introduced mind-blowing cosmic tales, but "The Coming of Galactus" storyline took it to another level.
